Dr. Jonalyn Rodriguez-Bernardino, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained cornea specialist who joined the staff at Marianas Eye Institute in 2025. For over a decade, she served at José R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, one of the Philippines’ top government hospitals, where she led the Cornea and External Disease Section and helped oversee residency training and admissions.
She has also served patients at Asia Pacific Eye Care and Marymount Hospital in Manila, and contributed to US veterans’ healthcare evaluations through a US-based telemedicine program.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Rodriguez-Bernardino is a respected medical educator. As an Associate Professor at Fatima University Medical Center and a lecturer at multiple institutions, she trained future ophthalmologists with a teaching style marked by clarity, discipline, and compassion. She assisted residents in their initial and complex surgeries, delivered lectures on core clinical skills, advised on research protocols, mentored residents, and proofread manuscripts for publication. She also helped design and administer written and oral examinations in line with national standards.
In her administrative roles, she collaborated with the Residency Training Officer to develop structured modules for pre-residents and to set clear criteria for promotion and graduation. She also initiated a pre-admission communication system to enhance patient tracking and care coordination.
Dr. Rodriguez-Bernardino is known for her close collaboration with ophthalmic staff and allied health professionals. She frequently appeared as a guest expert on Philippine radio and television, educating the public on eye health and disease prevention.
Her clinical interests include cataract surgery, complex corneal disease, dry eye, and improving surgical outcomes in resource-limited settings. She has presented her work at regional conferences and contributed to protocols for high-volume corneal care.
