Dr. Keri F Allen, MD, joined the staff at Marianas Eye Institute in 2020 as its newest eye specialist.  She spent the prior year working to advance eye care in Ethiopia, through a dual fellowship appointment as a Fogarty Global Health Fellow with the National Institutes of Health and the Global Ophthalmology Fellow at Emory Eye Center.  While in Ethiopia, her work and research focused on improving cataract surgery outcomes.  She was instrumental in curriculum development to prepare Ethiopian ophthalmologists for their International Council of Ophthalmology examinations, and her success was reflected in Ethiopia receiving the highest exam scores on the African continent for the year. She also spent significant time implementing surgical training “wet labs” so that surgeons could gain skills in the laboratory to improve patient safety.  A thorough and careful researcher, Dr. Allen led the care and safety efforts at Marianas Eye Institute during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to her Global Ophthalmology Fellowship, Dr. Allen completed a 3-year research fellowship at Harvard University’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in the field of glaucoma genetics.  Her career aspirations include practicing comprehensive ophthalmology internationally in underserved areas and continuing efforts towards blindness prevention in low-and middle-income countries.

Known for her warm and thorough care, Dr. Allen is beloved by her patients in the CNMI. Though she grew up in Miami, she is an “island-girl” herself, with family roots in Jamaica. With her new roots in CNMI, she expects to continue her involvement in the broader field of global ophthalmology, with travel to countries in need.
